I have been what you could call a rivethead for a long time now and upon researching other 'futurist' cultures I cant help but to notice the similarity between rivetheads and cyberpunks. the two cultures share a interest in dystopia, media subject matter [movies, books etc.], technology and many other things.

Discuss...

There is a certain overlap between the two, no doubt about that. the main difference (to me) is that rivetheads usually have a certain dresscode whereas cyberpunks can look like anybody or nobody and still be cyberpunks, for them it's mostly a frame of mind.
Nothing negative about rivetheads, I've spent a lot of time with them here in Denmark and with my New Rock boots and black, militaristic style in clothing I could easily be confused with one.
For the tiny minority of people that even know what a rivethead is, of course Very Happy
When I imagine the "perfect" cyberpunked society rivetheads are an essential part of it and has always been.

Like Calem pointed out: Rivetheads seem to have a dresscode, cyberpunks dont have a dresscode.

I myselve, usually wear military cargo pants, black T-Shirt from Punkrock or Metal bands. Doctor Martin Boots or cheaper combat boots.

I shave my head sometimes, sometimes whole bold, but mostly only the sides to keep the Mohawk haircut. Sometimes i color my hair red, green or black.

I also do occasionally use black lipstick, black nailpolish and also some make-up to make my face white / or black.

Da music i listen to is mostly hardcore/punk/metal, sometimes classical music, a bit of techno/hardcore gabba,, and the occasional pop / reggae songs.

But i am not a rivethead nor a real cyberpunker.

More a punkrocker who likes sci-fi, Fantasy and cyberpunk movies.
I also did some hacking in the 80s and 90s. Can program my own games and databases, create my own webpages, and design / repair my own laptops. So, i am also a bit tech-freakky-ish.

Used to wear jewelry made from computer components, but abbandoned that, because too many people were thinking that i was insane (which i indeed am.... but not for them to know...)

One i sticked a PC motherboard to the back of my jacket. Put Safety-pins through the screw holes of the mobo, to keep it stuck to my jacket .

So yeah, the punkrock safety pins were mixed with a damaged Motherboard. Punk meets tech.

But cyberpunk ? Dont know mate....

You guys have basically said exactly what I wanted to hear. I mean I know there is a dresscode but some rivetheads dont dress in the steryotypical gear some look like average people. the shaved/partially shaved part is must though lol. I also feel that the mindset of a rivethead is almost exactly the same as a cyberpunk just maybe not as technical. I love technology and futurist matter so maybe I am a combination of the two not to put a label on myself.

Awesome picture btw very similar

I also think it's not only the dresscode. the variety of music also seemed to be greater for Cyberpunks to me.

Some might but not all. Cyberpunk (again, to me...hehe...) isn't connected to a certain type of music or scene, it's a scene within itself.
Musically I'm into EBM, Industrial, Darkwave, Doom Jazz, Death Metal, Black Metal, Prog Rock, Classical, Jazz, Dub/step, ambient, IDM and all sorts of genres, subgenres and categories, I simply just love great music in whatever form it comes. I can hear reggae all day, go and see VNV Nation at night and when I come back put on some Prokofiev, no biggie Very Happy
the overlap occurs when someone gets introduced to the other, either by being into the rivethead scene and find a deeper meaning besides "just" music while others may have been cyberpunks all their lives (perhaps without even knowing, as is the story of many people here) and then get introduced to a scene that shares the ideals in a more tangible way such as rivetheads, that actively are heading towards Dystopia and signals this through the way they dress.

In my Dystopia I see not only rivetheads but also goths, gabbers, ravers, bikers, all of the subcultures. the one thing that unites them is the animosity felt by "Citizens".
Y'all know what I mean Wink

Word.

Hell, I consider myself to dress more like a punk than any aesthetic of cyberpunk by far. I find cyberpunk to be more in line with a philosophy rather than an aesthetic (as it is with most punk subcultures), and I find that I've been in line with that philosophy for a long while.

I don't know many fans of real industrial music who would ever refer to themselves as rivetheads anymore. That's mostly been relegated to the EBM fans, at least around here.

Well most of the people who would call themselves a rivethead are cybergoths even some goths. There are still a fair few true rivetheads out there including myself though I lean towards the cyberpunk culture.

@Calem awesome explanation man =] My musical taste isnt as varied as yours but I do like a bit of 40's/50's style music. Most of the time though I always drift back to powernoise and EBM [skinny puppy etc.] and I see your view of dystopia in the same way. A melting pot of different cultures mainly sharing the same aesthetic

Heh , very nice to see a fellow Rivethead around here .

Yes , indeed , the Rivethead culture is somewhat similar to Cyberpunk , as you stated , with the futuristic technology , oppressive corps. and whatnot .

But , IMHO , the main difference between the two is that Cyberpunk can also deal with the less harsher aspects of the future and focus on progress & evolution of mankind , and even utopian civilizations , instead of just the hopeless dystopia feeling that the Rivethead culture has .

Nevertheless , both of them are related and awesome .

P.S. : regarding the Cybergoths/Goths/Rivetheads etc. nowadays ... IMHO , all of these are useless labels , you can listen to what you like and dress how you want , but never declare yourself something , let the others figure out what you truly are Smile

Wooo another rivethead! I see your points. I never label myself although I do acknowledge that I follow a lot of rivethead traits and cyberpunk traits. I kinda see things as we can evolve and progress but it has to end at some point but there is no problem in continuing our existence and making the most of it lol

See now Rivetheads drive a car like this, dippy doo dippy doo. But a Cyberpunk drives a car like this, doop, doop doopy doo.
