Ah yes, the digital dark age that future historians will argue over...

Dood! Magnets! Use the magnets! Mr. Green

I remember losing my data once, long time ago, about 10 years ago, so I don't even remember what I felt about it, there was nothing special to miss anyway.
But I have this regretful feeling when I remember about something that I've done in the past, like some website, or a level for some game, and I wonder if I still have it somewere on my disk, or it's probably gone.
I believe that to keep your data from the day you has made your first click is as important as keeping all the stuff you wrote in your diary, if not even more important. I mean, life zu short anyway, and to lose even a small piece of work, of that time you spent doing it, is just... sad Rolling Eyes
I read about your really deep feelings about losing data, and I understand it, but I'm an electronic hobbyist, I've burned more precious chips/lasers/diodes than I can count, so I really miss that data, but I always calm myself with the fact that it's just another hi-tech junk
but I still feel this burning feeling of regret and blame in my chest when another thing dies, or my data's getting lost...
That was one of the reasons for me to create my website, to put all the junk there.

I used to back everything up on CD's and then eventually DVD's, but that became a HUGE pain in the fucking ass!
I switched to External HDD's and had a seperate HDD on my PC as a backup drive in case "C" went down.

A few years back I lost EVERYTHING on my 250GB external! (I filled all 250 of it)
ALL MY SHIT WAS GONE!
Luckily that's when I looked into "recovery" software and managed to recover %95 of that 250GB!

I don't worry about "data loss" anymore since the recorvery software I have is obviously teh shit!
I highly suggest from personal experience using "Ontrack EasyRecovery Pro 6.3" (gotta get the new one)

^Wow that totally reads like a fucking commercial lol! Twisted Evil

but they are kept until the new model arrives and you get paranoid about her digging through your pc one day...

More or less thankfully , I've only experienced data loss only one time , and that was because one of my HDD's died ... Yeah , lost quite some stuff I've struggled to get over time , but the biggest part of things was recovered , through time of course .

From that point on , I got an external HDD which I update weekly with the stuff I currently have in my pc and know I'd need later , in case that happens again . But yeah , data loss is what hurts the most DX

I've only ever had one massive data loss that wasn't related to me accidentally deleting the wrong folder.. around 2004-2005 there was a batch of bad controllers or something that went on HDDs that got shipped out, and nearly every HDD maker had at least a couple of lots with those bad chips on them.. In the span of 4-5 months thousands of drives died, and I had three with that controller or whatever it was that went wrong..

Which just reminded me, that at the time that happened I was downloading the Vampire the Masquerade tv series and I never got to watch more than the 1st episode... time to go hunting! Mr. Green

IBM had a production run of Deskstar series drives that got rechristened Deathstar because they had so high failure rate. I was lucky and ended up with one that had a updated firmware that postponed the issue, as well as i never really stressed the drive.

Data loss presents an interesting dynamic as compared to physical circumstance.
I've definitely experienced it too.

When you loose important possessions, it sucks because that thing is physically gone and you can't utilize it any more, or perhaps there were specific memories connected to the object.

When someone (or a pet) dies, it's difficult to cope with the emotional and interactive loss that takes place.

Data loss seems to be the combination of both of these types; for most of us, data equals not only memory but physical manifestations of more spatial things like writing from a story or artwork (representing memories/thought). Also it means the loss of physical possession such as images, programs, music, movies and saved games.
the lines start to blur when you think about the implications of both types together- both equate to valuable time spent on procuring or creating something, the emotional connections you create and foster with repeated exposure to them, and the knowledge that you'll never quite have back that singular node of memory/time/imagery in the exact same way.
the whole issue reminds me of a book I read called 'Love and Sex with Robots' (discovered via a review on this site ^_^) that deals with the closing gap between human interaction and feeling with electronics vs more traditional attachment. I.e. how we are increasingly forming emotional attachment to devices/synthesized interaction in the same way that we love a person or animal.
To me it just means that all these things are inherently the same, and our advances in technology are closing the gap between the perceived differences. It's completely possible to have feelings for a program or piece of hardware like we would for a living organism. Feeling is just chemical secretion reinforced by neural pathways......
God, the brain is fascinating.

Personally I'd be the most gutted to loose artwork and writing, then photos, and music last.

I lost a part of my data a few years ago. I was first upset... there was nothing really important but some videos that I edited, a few personnal production (mostly short stories) and my music collection ... Fortunately, I had shared most of it with a few friends before and could get a copy back quickly....
Now, I've got at least 3 backups of all my works. But not my music. Not enough space for it ...

I did that -- with music. *quick tally* 24 GB (the other 226GB is system/video). When I had a 40GB hdd, I used about 8-16GB. I save more things when I have more space, so between all of my computers, I have about 5 or 10 GB free.

Pretty much Very Happy

I've got a 500gig in my Xbox with about 450 gigs of movies and 50 gigs of games, my main desktop has 1x650gig, 1x250gig, 2x500gig, an external 320gig (where all my DnB/dubstep/hard acid/hardcore/gabber MP3s/WAV are incase I have a gig where CDJ-2000s or Serato/Traktor are available), and my old computer is sitting idle right now with a 250gig and 2x40gig...

My roommate just got a 40" HDTV so now I think it's time to build a massive HTPC/Media Server/NAS to replace the old xbox that can only do 720p.. found an all-in-one board with 6 SATA slots... I figure 4x3tb, 1xDVD and 1xSSD (nothing major just 8-16gigs for the OS and XBMC) would go a long way towards being an awesome little livingroom box with a massive collection..
