Did not notice that it had Mg alloy case, I saw black and taught that it was plastic, as the new ones I have seen and used are shiny.
God damn the urge to buy it is starting to get the better of me. _________________ function over form

Continuing on the subject, did you find any drivers for the GSM/GPRS modem? And how much was the shipping from the german store? _________________ function over form

the shipping cost was 16 euro. I think i found the GSM modem driver. because when i use the Hyperterminal of Windows XP, it reacts to the AT (hayes) commands. It can use about 9600 baud or so for wireless data transfer via the GSM network.
You have to insert a SIM card in the Cf-27 to use the GSM modem of course.
I am now looking for software that makes it possible for me, to use the Panasonic Toughbook CF-27 laptop, to make phone calls.
It has a microphone, a speaker, and a GSM-modem. Windows XP.
But yeah, didnt find any software yet.
I googled some things, played with it for about 6 hours, but still didnt find any software.
Do you have any hints for good software that i could use (freeware or so), so i can use the CF-27 to phone other folks.
Oh, the military antenna on the left-side is a real eye-catcher. All my friends love it. hehe.
I also ordered a Panasonic CF-71 from another guy in Europe. Still waiting, might come by mail on next monday or tuesday.

Well you could try getting some info on the GSM modems chipset or manufacturer. You could mail philips and say that you have to service some old installation with the laptop in <insert remote location where the GSM modem is usefull for sending technical data home> and thet the installation has a couple of mill's poured in to it and no replacemeant is seen in the next 10years etc.
If that fails one just might crack open the case and physically examine the chips and the modem to determine the make and model.
I fear that it is a rather uncommon one.
If it comes to opening the case one might upgrade the ram while at it.
Also, only 9600baud? What a joke, I could do 14.4kbaud with my mom's cell in 1998! I was hoping that it had GPRS that runs on GSM network, good 10kbs (2x 56kbaud modem rate )
Are you planing on taking up collecting ruggedized laptops as your next hobby? _________________ function over form

Got my Panasonic CF-71 today.
Looks less rugged as the CF-27, but is a bit faster.
Specs are :
Intel Pentium III 446 mhz
328 megabyte memory
12 GB HDD
1.44" FDD / CD Rom
13.3 inch non-glare 1024x768 TFT screen
Power Adapter
PCMCIA wireless and a pcmcia wired card 10/100
Steel carying handle
Protection:
Magnesium alloy casing
harddrive is enclosed in a polymer gel wrap
keyboard and mousepad are splash-proof
Looks nice, a bit faster as the CF-27. And this one has SSE.
So, conclusion from me is :
the CF-27 is more rugged and
the CF-71 is faster but less rugged. _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

Again the question, where was it procured, how much and how was the shipping.
I like laptops even if I dont own a great bunch.
I'm eagerly waiting for proper ARM based laptops.
A small slim fully solidstate, no moving parts laptop with a good battery life for a few days for continous use is something I look forward too.
Sure there are those "cheap" sub-100usd MIPS and ARM laptops usually loaded with WinCE from china. But those are just cruel jokes. _________________ function over form

Oh, i bought the CF-27 from a german website
http://www.alles4pc.de/product_info.php?cPath=20&products_id=723&PHPSESSID=4958995f6252b4fe54b73cb6da857b7c&page=
the laptop arrived in a very well packet box. the shipping time was not long, but unfortunately i ordered my CF-27 in late december 2010, so the shop was closed for 2 weeks. That made it took longer to arive.
the laptop i bought is in crisp condition, hehe,. for only 99 euros or so.
Shipping cost was 16 bucks. _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

Not really interested, because the shipping costs would be too expensive for me to pay.
But i have another question about the Panasonic CF-27 and CF-71 Toughbook. As I also have Compaq Armada 1700/1750 laptops, who have the handy abbility to stretch the screen with the CTRL+T combination, does anybody know if the CF-27 or CF-71 also has this feature ?
Because a lot of games i play are in 640x480 or 800x600 resolution, and my CF-71 has 1024x768 resolution, and then the games would be in fullscreen.
So, simpel said: Does anybody know a solution that the screen can be expanded to 1024x768 ? _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

And some more news , since i got this beast since last month:
Windows XP - sp 1 works nice on it. I installed a whola bunch of games on it.
Oh, and i am still looking for some good service manuals for the CF-27. the ones i already downloaded are just some papers with the schematics, and thats way to nibly-pro for me. _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

I'm planning on getting one eventually, and I mentioned it on the forums. Perhaps that's where you remember it?

I wouldn't bother with XP (or games) on military-grade hardware. I've been thinking Linux or some BSD flavour the whole time. _________________ __o__

Before XP, there was 2000. Before 2000, there was Unix. the Navy cried when they lost Unix. _________________ __o__
