Yep, folks, i want to buy another laptop for my collection of "special" laptops.
This time , its the Panasonic Toughbook CF-27. Its an old laptop from 1998 or so, it has an Pentium 2 - 300Mhz inside, but its tough.
I am just thinking wether to buy the CF-27 or the CF-18. the CF-18 is newer, faster, but the keyboard sucks, and the tablet option also is lame.
What would you folks buy ? My budget is between 100-300$.
hehe.
Oh, and by the way, this topic is about Punkrock-proof laptops = rugged laptops that can withstand extreme conditions like
-snow
-water
-dust
-vibrations
-dropping from 1 meter on concrete
-bulletproof
-surviving a fire for at least 5 minutes
-etc.etc
so, all members may post their own idea of what their best rugged laptop is/can be.
Cheers.
and in the meantime, Stormtrooper is drinking beer, and watching nice videoclips on youtube. _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

thats correct, but what if the information that is inside the laptop is worth more as many human lifes ?
what if the laptops contains ....
the cure for Aids
or a blueprint to built a spaceship that can travel faster as light
or a blueprint for a timemachine
or a formula for eternal life ?
Then , even when the wearer dies, the laptop itselve is not damaged.
so, therefore,, ... also bulletproof laptop ... please...
any hints ? _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

A kevlar & ceramic plate armoured case would work for the bulletproof aspect, and if the case is good enough, even seal the case to 100M underwater AND cover your fireproofing needs. _________________ __o__

Aren't we then slowly but steadily moving away from the part where it's supposed to be portable?

the old Panasonic Toughbook series used to be amazing. I'd seen one shown at a computer show back in 95/96 where the guy started playing a CD in the laptop, then he took it and slammed it onto the floor of the stage and the CD didn't skip.. the LCD can work down to -40c and take a bowling ball without cracking.. (at least that's what it was like back then, don't know if they're still that good)

the formula for eternal life would itself have to be eternal. Those are the rules.

Oh man, the ever-so-important beer-proofing! Gotta include that, though I think water proof / resistance might qualify... _________________ __o__

panasonic cf-18,TOUGHBOOK,Water Resistant .TABLET EXTREME
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu_Fc2E6xxs
if it can handle water, it also can handle beer Spilling.
But its a sin to spill the beer. dont spill the beer, spill the blood and drink the beer.
Does this make sense ? To me it does, and i love beer. and i do not drink blood. At least not yesterday.

I have a CF-27.
It's from the era when laptop hardware wasn't very standard, so getting linux or bsd running fully on it is a bitch. (Or, it was for me, but I'm not very good with PCs.)
Fuckers are heavy.
But yeah, they're nice. There's a sub-notebook toughbook that's a little faster, which is neat. the CF-34?
the gel disk caddy looks like something from Videodrome.

I want pics of the internals, just to be certain.
And, yes, a Panasonic Toughbook has been in my dreams for almost a decade. _________________ __o__

Unless the plans for a cure for aids at the speed of light is just a few pages of a txt document I doubt a p2 300 will be able to handle it! Mind you I used to own in counter strike on a 233 with a 28kbps modem. But if they need super computers to calculate DNA strands and make those funky 3d renditions of them then I doubt the eternal life elixir will fit on it.
Actually a friend of mine got a 2 year old ex military one and said it was extremely awesome to have a rugged laptop except he can hardly browse the web nowadays because it processes so slowly/ _________________

Yeah, speed is a problem. Also 8-bit color, if I remember correctly.
I occasionally use mine as a telnet terminal, that's about it. Haven't actually fired up X on it in ages.
