I'm not sure how aware everyone is of this, but I have to say I find this utterly fascinating and amazing.

Fucking youtube. This a link to her holographic concert performance, the song is " the World is Mine"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTXO7KGHtjI

Hatsune Miku, the adorable female mascot for the vocal singing synthesizer program made by Crypton Future Media. Her name is Hatsune Miku, which can be read as 'future sound'. Her voice is partially sampled by Saki Fujita, a popular voice actress.

"She" is insanely popular, and the reason I mentioned terrorism was this: When a UK magazine published an article about Hatsune Miku and used a real women as the cover model, Hatsune's obsessive fans went berserk.

There were pipe bomb threats to the magazine's London office, the website was hacked and the Hatsune article was made inaccessible, personal death threats were made to the author and photographer. the author was threatened with being anally raped with a leek until she died.

To date Crypton have confirmed little solid information about Miku aside from her age and physical measurements, thus giving her fans the freedom to mould her according to their own personal definitions of pop perfection, internet stardom, and digitopian dream. She is a collective vision, a glimpse into a future that promises, “We can create something perfect, if we just let ourselves imagine.”

Miku played her first live gig in Saitama, Japan in August of 2009, projected to the audience as a giant 3D hologram. She ‘sings’ while a live band plays behind to her. Since then she’s played a number of sold out gigs in Japan, has traveled to Singapore to perform, and in September 2010 played her first show in American, performing at the J-Pop Summit Festival in San Francisco. Her concerts are epic events, with many of her fans showing up in cosplay Miku costumes, and with the remaining thousands screaming hysterically, frantically waving glow sticks in thrall of her towering figure.

A perfect holographic singer. I would love to know what Gibson thinks.

I don't have a cache of links right now, but I've been following Hatsune Minku for some time (mainly because this was one of the few trends from Japan that came out and I missed it).

I will bring more links.

Jesus. Some times I worry about humanity. and by sometimes I mean all the time.

Bombs and death threats because they showed a real woman instead of a hologram!? JESUS.

On a side note, a singing hologram woman is a good step in the direction of cyberpunk media. (not sure if thats a good thing)

Absolutely deplorable behavior over a cartoon.

Hildr, you should check out Gibson's twitter feed, someone's probably already asked him about this idoru.

they have and he made a small comment on it. Can't remember when. You'd have to search his stream.

the worst part is, I keep finding myself humming some of the songs "she" performs. the "Vegetable Juice" song is the worst earworm I've ever encountered.

the circle is complete.

Now we just wait for it to fall in love, break out of cyberspace, live in a thermos for a few months and then casually stroll naked out of a small franchise convenience store somewhere in San Francisco.

Looks like they are projecting it onto a semi-transparent screen. Keep it dark behind the screen, make the projector bright enough, and it will show up. Kind of like looking out of a window at night, you can see your own reflection if it's dark out and bright inside.

Not a true hologram, just regular CG clip and an old theater technique.

PS Weeaboos and Otaku falling in love with a cartoon is so very very sad.

Weeaboos rank only slightly higher than Furries on the scale of things that suck. Furries and Juggalos are at the absolute bottom of the list.
