Overview: Indian Cyberpunk? You bet! Enthiran is the first cyberpunk, science fiction movie from India, a production released only a few months ago, in October 2010, with a estimated budget of US$38 million and a box-office hit. Need I say more? OK, not only the first sci-fi movie out of India, not only the most expensive production there, it became the highest grossing Indian filme of all time. Are those enough reasons for you to see it or do you want some more? Let's take a look at the story.
the Story: Dr. Vaseegaran is a well-intentioned research scientist on the A.I. field and develops the most advanced robot, nicknamed Chitti. At first, Chitti is used for everyday taks, such as cooking and driving, and with the intention of use it as a weapon, the good doctor invariably loses control of his creation.
Well, the plot is nothing new, feeling like a mix of Frankenstein meets Terminator meets the Matrix, so the big twist here is exactly the movie's origins. Being a Indian production, all Bollywood conventions are to be found, and I'm talking about the dance sequences intercut all around in the almost 3 hours of running time. Yes, running time here is exactly 02 hours and 56 minutes, so if you're giving it a go, be sure to schedule some time to properly enjoy the movie. the dance numbers don't add much to the plot and surely don't move it forward, but it helps the movie in staying true to its roots.
Actually, labelling Enthiran just a science fiction movie would be wrong. It's more like a amalgam of sci-fi, fantasy, comedy and even romance, because when the robot Chitti begins to develop his own emotions it is when things start to go wrong for him.
Cyberpunk themes
Artificial Intelligence is the great theme in Enthiran, and soon, with an intelligence that surpass his makers, Chitti begins to develop emotions and feelings, and things start to go awry when he falls in love with the scientist's fiáncee, the beautiful Sana.
It is remarkable the similarity between Chitti, when he becomes the villain, and another villain from a similarly themed movie, the Matrix. Yes, I'm talking about Agent Smith. What is remarkable is that we, as audience, can perceive the fun both actors are having in playing the bad guy. Rajinikanth, of course, is Enthiran's star, and playing both the scientist and its creation, he surely steals the movie from any other actor. His enjoyment is visible when Chitti becomes bad guy, and the only thing left is to hop on board and have some fun.
the cyberpunk themes are underlined all over the movie, and while it is not a philosophically heavy production, Enthiran has some pretty good ideas and executes them in a way that brings a much welcomed breath of fresh air to the genre. Kudos to them.
Conclusion: While the movie may be unintentionally funny, specially at latter parts (which can be found at the youtube video), at least one view is mandatory. With the success it achieved, Enthiran is a must watch for any cyberpunk-science-fiction fan.

sorry , but US $38 is not the most expensive Bollywood movie ever, better first understand or look at bollywood movies.
and also, there are many more Bollywood movies that get more money....
Anyhow, i enjoyed the snippets.
my question: shall i download it on torrent, to review it, in my critical stormtrooper way, or shall i try to import it to holland for $100 or maybe never ?
anyhow, i like the footage, total over the top action,
like, how do i hate / like the matrix, wait, we can do it better, hahaha. _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

Storm, download it, I did, but my version didnt came out as good as I'd hoped, hence the low quality screenshots.
If I had the money I'd buy it, but a hundred bucks for a movie? No way man.

Thanks for reminding me on this topic, ashleyjames222. Its friday the 13th, what can go wrong ? Anyhow, i did forget what i posted before on this topic in 2011. Strange to re-read my own words.
Just watched the link, and also read the wikipedia article about this fab movie.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enthiran
Simply : Phantastic.
I myselve, am the project-leader of project A.N.G.E.L.
on hold since 2006. But soon we will establish a new team with me as leader, to continue development on project A.N.G.E.L.
the movie Enthiran is fiction. My project is reality. Strong AI that can mimic human personalities.
A.N.G.E.L. stands for Analysing New Generated Electronic Lifeform.
PRoject began in 1986. In 2011, I and my old team members celebreted 25 years of Angel.
Angel is also the counterpart / arch-enemy of project Echelon.
Think of this:
Echelon = big brother for the rich (1%) people
Angel = little sister for the poor (99%) people _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation

Hi JamesBarclay, welcome to the forum. I have to remind you, that this is our "old" forum. Most of the members are now on the Newish forum.
http://cyberpunkforums.com/
Only the reviewer forum is kept on Cyberpunkreview.com, because the SFAM (the creator of CPR) doesnt have much time to keep the forum up-to-date....
anyhow, welcome JamesBarclay.
But to keep on topic: on the new forum is also a newcommers topic. Because otherwise I would re-rail this nice topic about the Indian Cyberpunk - Enthiran Review.... _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and the Corporation
