mbishop sharing data that is copyrighted is illegal no matter how it is distributed. you can't lend your mates your vhs tapesof shows or your dvds because that is stealing money from the publisher etc. in fact the disclaimer at the start of movies says it's for private viewing and not sharing. however i doubt anyone really polices the indie network but you never know. here at least the laws still apply.

yeah, that's not really the heart of the question. A crime is a crime. Cyber bullying, hacking, pirating, are all still crimes. I get that.

I'm pretty sure, in the US at least, that Internet providers are forced, by law, to keep certain records, and give those records to law enforcement should they ask for them.

If it's a private network, am I obligated to keep those records? Am I obligated to give them to law enforcement if they ask?

Honestly, the Internet was much the same until AOL brought EVERYONE online, once the people came, the ads came, and it became TV ...

IANAL, but I'd think the answer (by now) is 'yes,' here, even though I'd prefer it otherwise. Sad

It is an interesting idea to look into the matter.

Thanks for understanding the question. I'm not sure where the law would fall, since I know I'm not required to keep logs about who accesses my network at a lan-party. What's a darknet if not just a huge lan-party? At the same time, I'd hate to encourage people to do something, only to find they'll be held legally responsible for what any dick does on the network.

I actually did answer the question Razz If it's a private network how will the cops find out about it? they'd have ot cotton on to it for reasons of illegal file sharing and then yes you will need to provide evidence just the same as if i was suspected of pirating movies they would come take computers from my house. And, less tasteful, child pornography rings run via private networks and there have ben many operations here in australia breaking these rings and confiscating equipment/data.

edit: to clarify, you're not an internet provider, more intranet i guess? you may have to see if there are other laws involved.
