darknet, private-net laws? |

I was just thinking about the idea that, if people wanted to, they could probably set up a town-wide wireless intra-net using only spare parts. Maybe even set up an old-school modem bank to allow people dial-up access.
My question is ... if one were to do that in the US, or your home country, would the laws of the internet still apply?
I imagine they would, but I'm as far from a lawyer as one can get.

Laws can only be enforced on what they can find. _________________ What's more important, the data or the jazz? Sure, sure, 'Information should be free' and all that- but anyone can set information free. the jazz is in how you do it & what you do it to. the data is 1's and 0's. Life is the jazz.

In the U.S., there's no restriction as of yet for creating darknets that I'm aware of (as long as you're not stepping on the FCC's toes, ofc), be it wifi, ethernet, or *shudder* ring token. _________________ __o__

Melbourne has a free wifi system just as that. I looked it up, people set up antenna's to link to neighboring antennas and there is a network throughout the city. Have to buy the parts for it and it can only connect to the network but still it's awesome. _________________

We have this thing here, ZAP Québec.
http://www.zapquebec.org/english/
It's not really a "darknet" but it's a non-profit whose goal is to cover the widest wireless internet connectivity area possible within the city. It mainly exists to give SMBs a ready-to-go package to advertise that wi-fi on the front door.
EDIT: should have mentioned I have a friend who's doing some sociology research for them as his final project. Really interesting stuff, strangely there's not that much pre-existing literature. the survey he made had a bigger sample size than most of his references. _________________ Knowledge is power.

yeah we've got http://www.ilesansfil.org/ in Montreal that's the same thing - sign up for free and you can use wifi from any routers that are subscribed to the Ile Sans Fils system.. but running an actual, not-internet-connected darknet sounds like something that could be kind of great..

remember ... son, I used to sysop one on a Tandy T1000. I used 'WildCat', and my first job when I was a kid was working for a bigger, more professional BBS, which I helped turn into a local dial-up ISP.
My biggest download was a pirate copy of Doom 1.666, and we had a forum for arranging nightly matches between my patrons.
All the comments about the BBS days are true. You generally knew everyone who logged in. You met one another in person, and played games together. There was no such thing as a 'troll' yet, but if someone stepped out of line, they'd usually apologize and try to make it right.
Honestly, the Internet was much the same until AOL brought EVERYONE online, once the people came, the ads came, and it became TV ...
enough old-man ramblings...

yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about ... just a local 'net. My question is, if it's illegal to something on the 'internet', does that law also apply to the local net?
Here, I know there are laws about logging IP addresses and helping our law enforcement. I was wondering, if we arranged a group of people to create a local network, would we have to do all that?

mbishop sharing data that is copyrighted is illegal no matter how it is distributed. you can't lend your mates your vhs tapesof shows or your dvds because that is stealing money from the publisher etc. in fact the disclaimer at the start of movies says it's for private viewing and not sharing. however i doubt anyone really polices the indie network but you never know. here at least the laws still apply. _________________
