This is effectively a hacker movie, as the main character's autobiographical hacking of Harvard's sororities websites to create his own "Hot or Not" website lead to the creation of facebook. Any fan of David Fincher will appreciate this as it's one of his most compelling films to date. It's compulsively watchable. Solid performances and a decent soundtrack from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of 12 Rounds adds to the film. But it really is Sorkin's writing that wins this as the story weaves in and out of legal depositions while they continually fade back in flashback to various events that lead to present day. It's a rise and fall of an ubernerd but the pacing, editing and characters that make the movie race by. It touches on all sorts of subjects of modern day transparency, privacy, intellectual property and "coolness" based on the simplest of velvet rope faux elitism, as well as the residual bubble dot com capitalism at work in technology. As someone that has avoided facebook and most social sites for the exact reason this film exploits, it's amusing to see how much ego, revenge, delusion and bitterness drives these characters in a sort of nerd rage to power. While not "cyberpunk" on the surface, I think this proves Fincher to be one of the greatest storytellers of our generation, and certainly one who understands the underbelly of both punk and cyberspace worlds unquestionably. _________________ --END TRANSMISSION--

He made some compelling replies there but, I think people may miss the point that this still is a fictionalized version of history. It's exaggerated for a reason. It's meant to show nerd rage, which misogyny is without a doubt a part of. In these heady days of "nerd happy nerd friendly" programming, it's easy to forget the simplest of things... as is said at one point "the internet isn't written in pencil, it's in ink". But the women aren't the only ones to get the caricature treatment, 2 Harvard wasps that originally were the target for Zuckerberg's revenge are also treated to the typical "Quarterback Ahole" stereotype so... I totally get he was painting here, and not realistically. In fact he even has those 2 characters say out lound at one point "Hey, we aren't chasing the Karate Kid around the gym in skeleton masks". LOL. Fucking outstanding writing. _________________ --END TRANSMISSION--

To be honest, although I didn't see the movie yet, I was surprised that nobody came up with that yet.

To this moment I thought that that movie was just a garbage because I DO believe that facebook IS one. I do not understand all the noise about it being great, and why the creator of facebook received some award like "man of the year" or something.
It just pisses me off that it's a cult of 'simple internet' today, like you know, 50 years later, new generations (if any) are gonna watch some movie about our time, and they're gonna see "how those cooked-up girls posted their shoped pics and wrote all about themselves in that facebook", like they're selling themselves. And that's not embarassing, more like a sad thing.
I mean, when did internet become a platform for shitty, tasteless projects like that? When? _________________ Bad Alien: I come in peace.

"It's compulsively watchable."
That's a great way of putting it. the movie is way more exciting than you'd expect. Definitely recommend it, regardless of your thoughts on the actual facebook site.

It's a very well produced film, and a success story of one geek versus everyone else. That is what I like about the film.
I don't like how it negatively and sensationally portrays Mark Zuckerberg - he is not a terrible person, and he didn't spend his FB development days double-crossing people, all he really did was eat lots of pizza and write lots of code. Although that wouldn't make a great film plot, it's the truth.
I actually like facebook despite its privacy invasion nature. I think most people have come to terms that lack of privacy is becoming an increasingly necessity in todays tightly connected world. Sad, but it's happening. Not much any of us can do.

Good points, but Zuckerberg did in fact hack those sites so... maybe you consider that a prank, he wasn't just a guy eating pizza. I do hear you about having to cast him in a bit of an ahole light... again, as I watched it I was keenly aware of the fact Sorkin was intentionally making a story up for entertainment reasons. As for privacy online, there was some rumor at some point people's images on facebook were being used on dating sites unbeknown to the users. Whether there was collusion with FB or someone just stole them... which is entirely possible and probably not that hard... it is a reminder than any involvement online on any site doesn't assure privacy. _________________ --END TRANSMISSION--
